FROM THE PRESIDENT'S EASEL
Wednesday, January 9, 2013
Late news: As this newsletter was being posted, we learned that our dear friend Maggie Price – skilled painter, inspiring teacher, author and co-founder of The Pastel Journal, and creative and technical mentor to pastel artists all over the planet -- has been diagnosed with a brain tumor following a seizure in late December. With her trademark wry humor and indomitable spirit, she has vowed to fight the cancer and is documenting her experience in her blog, paintingpartners.blogspot.com . Please join her family and her many friends, colleagues, and students in wishing her strength, courage, and the loving support of many warm hearts.
Now I do want to share with you what the New Year holds for the Maryland Pastel Society and its more than 200 members.
The MPS Board has been meeting and planning over the past few months to put together an outstanding series of general meetings and workshops for 2013. At our general meeting on Saturday, January 26, Danni Dawson will provide a pastel portrait demonstration. Ms. Dawson has exhibited nationally and internationally and has won many awards including the Salmagundi Award; visit her website for more information and to see her work. IAPS Master Circle Recipient Diana DeSantis will provide a landscape demonstration at the April 20 general meeting, preceded by a two-day landscape workshop at the Howard County Center for the Arts; see the registration information for this workshop under "events" on this website. The July 20 general meeting will provide members an opportunity to try free samples of Richeson pastel panels. Nationally known instructor Lorenzo Chavez will conduct a workshop September 23 through 27 for MPS members at a Maryland location yet to be determined. And finally, Alain Picard will travel from Connecticut to provide a portrait demonstration for the October 26 general meeting. There will be information preceding each of these events in this column and in separate notices. Stay tuned.
In other news, I have the pleasure of announcing that Cathy deLorimier is our 2013 Shades of Pastel Chair and that Jimmy Wright will be the juror. Look for the prospectus to come out soon.
And the finale: As you may have read in Deborah’s message a few weeks ago, Bob Borrell is our new Vice President. This is great news for MPS. Bob is an engaged, participatory, and helpful MPS member. Most recently, he was chair of the successful Members Only Show at Quiet Waters. We are so glad to have him on board.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Glenwood Community Center (click here for directions) in western Howard County on Saturday, January 26 for the Danni Dawson portrait demonstration! Bring a recent painting or one in progress to share (with a card or label for it so we know it’s yours!) and something yummy for the food table: we’ll be drawing names as usual for the food prizes.
Dawn Capron, President
Maryland Pastel Society
