Harriett Weinstock's Impression of Duane Wakeham

Duane Wakeham's Pastel Demo

My first IAPS was terrific.  We all loved seeing Richard McKinley, of course, and seeing his demo.  My favorite, if I must choose one, was Duane Wakeham.  He is so intelligent about his painting and so happy to share all his years of experience.  I do wish he was still giving workshops.  He spoke about shapes and colors as abstractions and dividing the surface into areas, spaces and shapes to achieve an "underlying abstract structure."  "Abstraction must underly all."   He diagrams a painting before beginning to figure out the underlying structure, starting with the horizontals and adding other shapes.  Somehow, it really resonated with me and, I hope, I will begin to use this in my painting.
